Improvement just the tonic for O’Callaghan

BLACKWOOD 2 RACING CLUB WARWICK 1

RACERS manager Curly O’Callaghan was feeling much better on Saturday, despite seeing his side hand Blackwood their first points of the season.

O’Callaghan, who missed the 7-0 capitulation to Littleton due to a viral infection, was back at the helm against the Midland Combination’s bottom club.

And, after branding the previous week’s performance “spineless”, he said his side’s latest defeat was a step in the right direction.

“We’re lacking a lot of confidence and we’re struggling to get a settled team,” said O’Callaghan.

“But it’s how we react that matters and there was a vast improvement in commitment and workrate from the players.”

Chris Millard gave the home side the lead after Racing Club had overplayed in the box before Tyron Amory dragged the visitors level.

A 35-yard strike from Jeremy Lynch restored the hosts’ advantage but Racers were presented with a gilt-edged opportunity to make it 2-2 when they were awarded a penalty in the last five minutes.

However, Amory, who had a trial with Swindon Town earlier this year, saw his spot kick turned around the post.

Even then, Racing Club had a chance to snatch a point in the last minute, but despite having a four-on-two break, the could only find their side netting.

Tomorrow, Racing Club have a welcome break from league action when they travel to Midland Alliance side Bridgnorth Town in the FA Carslberg Vase second qualifying round.
