Knight looks for the positives

COVENTRY COPSEWOOD 3 RACING CLUB WARWICK 2

Racers manager Lee Knight refused to be downhearted despite seeing his side slip to their fourth successive league defeat at high- flying Coventry Copsewood.

Ross Wimbush put the home side into the lead with a second-minute penalty, but Racing Club bounced back to dominate the first half.

However, after spurning a host of chances, they found themselves 2-0 down at the break after an Olly Manuel mistake allowed Peta John Gordon to score on the stroke of half-time.

A deflected second from Wimbush made it 3-0 just after the hour-mark, but the visitors refused to let their heads drop, with a Joe Holcroft penalty and 90th-minute Troy Smith strike adding some respectability to the scoreline.

“We’re almost there,” said Knight, who was without Shane Benjamin after the striker finally elected to join Blue Square Bet North side Stafford Rangers. “In the first half we played some great stuff. Dean [Curtis] and Tyron [Smith] could have had a couple each but we’ve got to start taking our chances.

“In the bar after the game, people were coming up to me and saying they can’t believe we’re bottom. But unless you’re putting points on the board the accolades don’t mean anything.

“It shows how far we’ve come, but we still need points. I’d rather play badly and get a win.”

Racing travel to second-placed Dosthill tomorrow before entertaining league leaders Heather St John’s seven days later.

And, despite the gulf in league places between the sides, Knight believes positive results are possible.

“It’s getting close to my side now. I’m not going to be changing the starting XI for the next two games as they need to gel.

“If we carry on progressing like we have, we’ll soon be in more of a positive position.”
