We won’t be pushovers says Racing Club boss

An early Neil Lawrence strike proved the only goal of the game, but despite the slender margin, manager Lee Knight said the result was never in doubt.

“After Daventry United, it’s another win against a team from a higher level,” said Knight, who gave a debut to former Redditch United midfielder Tom Willmore.

“We missed a lot of chances but we didn’t look in danger of losing the game.

“And, it’s a clean sheet for the completely new back four so it shows that they’re gelling.”

Despite no league points being up for grabs, Knight was forced to withdraw two players late in the game as the tackles flew.

It follows on from accusations made by Daventry United that Racing Club were over-physical in their friendly encounter.

However, Knight believes it would be unfair to label Racers a dirty side.

“The challenges were bookings at worst,” said Knight.

“The referee was over-cautious with his decisions but we’ve got a reputation with the way we play.

“We’ve finished bottom twice and we’re not going to be push-overs again.

“The lads will run through brick walls for us and if we upset people, we upset people - you’ve got to do the ugly things if you want to win games.

“We’ve brought in a couple of lads who have got reputations and the disciplinary records of one or two players last year left a lot to be desired.

“I won’t tolerate dissent, but we’ve got 20 lads all hungry to get into the 16 on August 13.

“Sometimes they may go a little over the top with enthusiasm, but it’s nothing more than that.”

Racing complete their pre-season campaign tomorrow with a trip to Whitnash (3pm).
