Week is not a total washout for Southam

Tuesday’s match against Pershore Town was postponed following an afternoon inspection, with heavy rain during the previous 48 hours having left parts of the pitch unplayable.

“We have just got to deal with the situation and get on with the job,” said Knibbs on hearing the news.

“The pitch was too wet in places, but we will have all the lads in for training and work on a few things, with a light session to follow on Thursday.”

Knibbs has announced a new member of the Saints backroom team in Chris Packard, a sports scientist from Manchester University, who will be working on the players’ fitness.

The Saints manager had been hoping for some match practice for Simon Proctor, Marc Passey and Ross Briscoe, who are all fit again after injury.

But, all three will still be in contention for tomorrow’s second-round tie at home to Baris Northern Counties East League Premier Division side Long Eaton United (3pm).

Southam will be without goalkeeper Ollie Manuel, who is getting married, so new signing Lee Wilson will make his club debut.

Last Saturday’s Coventry Charity Cup match was cancelled after opponents Highway Coundon withdrew from the competition when they could not raise a full side of eligible players.

Saints now go through to the second round, where they will be at home to Brinklow.

The winners will be away to Brooklands Jaguar in the quarter-finals.

 On Monday, young Saints notched up their fifth win in a row when they beat Cheltenham Town 6-0 to move into the third round of the Midland Floodlit Youth League Cup.

They will now meet Boldmere St Michaels at Banbury Road on Monday.

Southam United’s under-18s gained a hard-earned 4-2 victory over Leamington Brakes in the Midland Junior Premier League last Saturday.

Trailing by two goals at half- time, Southam came roaring back with goals from Luke Mason, Seff Murenzi, Cyril Okpoti and Ross Knight.
