Hibberdine lifts Magrath Cup

Leamington & County staged their 36-hole Magrath Cup over two weekends concluding last Sunday.

The highlight of the first round had been club champion and scratch golfer Jamie Goode’s return of 66, which was only two shots off the course record set by James Cook in 1989.

After completing the front nine under par, he claimed another birdie at the 402-yard 12th hole before bogeying the 17th.

Meanwhile, Michael Hibberdine returned a gross 81, nett 65, to secure the Guy’s Cliffe Cup for the best 18 holes.

The leading 45 golfers in the field of 140 qualified for the second round and Tom Wilson (3) set a fine target with a nett 68 and a two-round total of 141.

However, he eventually had to settle for fourth,with Hibberdine building on his fine first round to secure the Magrath Cup with a two-round total of 135.

Goode was two shots back after carding a second-round 71, claiming the Dick Cunnyngham Cup in the process, while Barry Trewin (15) was third on 140.

Leamington & County is offering ladies the chance to enjoy a free six-week taster session.

The coaching sessions are open to beginners/non members and provide an ideal opportunity for adults to try out the game.

There is the choice of two days, with Monday sessions beginning on September 12 and Saturday sessions starting on September 17.
