There is no place like home for Crewe Lane pairing McKay and McKenna

Kenilworth Golf Club players made good use of home advantage to take the top four places in the Kenilworth Bowl on Sunday.

Albert McKay and Karen McKenna scored 77, nett 66, to win the popular mixed open which was first competed for in 1949.

Martin and Jackie Corby (79, nett 67) finished runners-up by virtue of a better back nine than David and Chris Machin (88, nett 67).

Ron and Angela Guest (86, nett 68) were fourth on countback from Roger and Gill Snelson (Branston GC, 79, nett 68), and Martin Bradley (Kenilworth GC) and Pamela Corbett (Ladbroke Park GC) who shot 85, nett 68.

John Powell and Sarah Cranton (Stourbridge GC) took the best gross prize with 75, while Coventry’s Chris and Caroline Bates (39, nett 31) claimed the best front nine with Gordon and Ann Williams (42, nett 32) posting the best back nine score.

Meanwhile, countback was required to determine the July Medal on Saturday.

Paul Brewster (74, nett 68) took the A Division honours by virtue of a better back nine than Jack Keating (75, nett 68), with Kevin Harper (82, nett 69) claiming Division B.

Kenilworth golfer Adrian Riddell finished joint 17th in the English Mid-Amateur Championship at The Worcestershire Golf Club.

The 54-hole strokeplay competition attracted 144 entries and Riddell carded two rounds of 76 to make the cut.

The top 45 players progressed into the third round on Sunday and Riddell posted a level-par 71 for an overall total of 223, some 12 shots adrift of John Kemp (Woburn Golf Club) who lifted the Logan Trophy with 211.
