Hayles in Great Britain call-up

St Joseph’s Primary School pupil Lia Hayles is set to join fellow Coventry Olympic gymnast Holly Riseborough in gaining international honours.

The eight-year-old, who was born without a right hand, has received a call-up for Great Britain’s Gymnastics and Movement for People with a Disability (GMPD) artistic gymnastics squad.

Hayles started her gymnastics career with Leamington Sparklers then moved to Coventry Olympic on the recommendation of head coach Gordon Coton, who spotted her potential.

And, after only a year of training she was put forward for the British squad.

Hayles said she was “over the moon” to gain selection for Great Britain and is now looking forward to training sessions at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.

Having gained a silver and a bronze at a recent competition in Poole, Hayles will be looking to add to her medal haul when she competes in the GMPD National Compulsory Championships in Leicester in April.
