Kenilworth’s poor run continues as sloppy errors hand Burton the spoils

In a tight game at Glasshouse Lane, it was Burton that had the first opportunity to put points on the board after Kenilworth were penalised for offside in the second minute.

The kick was successful to give Burton a 3-0 lead.

Five minutes later, the visitors had the opportunity to double their advantage as Kenilworth gave away a second penalty for offside but on this occasion the ball drifted wide of the posts.

As the first quarter drew to a close, Kenilworth had a good period of possession, taking play inside the Burton half as the visitors conceded a string of penalties.

They had their first opportunity to put points on the board in the 20th minute after another penalty award but the kick was unsuccessful.

Five minutes later, Kenilworth were once again awarded a penalty, this time for a tackle around the neck from a Burton player.

Although Ks missed the kick to touch, they were soon back in possession and a superb kick from lock Dan Careless once again gave them fantastic field position just inside the Burton 22.

The ball eventually made its way to winger Joe Jepps who made a fine arcing run which resulted in yet another Kenilworth penalty.

From the resultant five-metre scrum the home side then earned a five-metre lineout.

However, the throw was adjudged not to be straight and the mistake proved costly as Burton attacked down the left flank to score the first try of the match in the 33rd minute.

The conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

As the half drew to a close, Burton looked to build on their lead but Kenilworth remained resolute to go in at the break 8-0 down.

The home side made a strong start to the second half and a charge-down inside Burton’s 22 from scrum-half Gareth Renowden led to a try for Ed Hannam.

Alex Selby duly converted to close the gap to just a point.

Kenilworth then moved in front for the first time in the 50th minute courtesy of another penalty from Selby.

However, Burton responded well and moved 11-10 ahead thanks to a penalty of their own.

The momentum swung between the sides in the third quarter before Kenilworth were presented with a great chance to stamp their mark on the game in the 60th minute.

Having applied pressure inside the Burton 22, Kenilworth were rewarded with a lineout in a promising position.

Unfortunately, they were unable to make the most of the opportunity and Burton cleared their lines.

The remainder of the game saw the Staffordshire side camped inside Kenilworth territory and their pressure yielded a further try in the 75th minute.

The touchdown went unconverted but Kenilworth were unable to find a response in the closing minutes.
