McGreavy gives pupils food for thought

Children at Telford Junior School had a surprise visitor at their sports day last week when London 2012 hopeful Sara McGreavy turned up to offer advice on how to keep fit and eat healthily.

McGreavy is a former pupil of the school and was keen to meet the Year 3 children and hopefully inspire some of them to follow in her footsteps as a professional athlete.

After speaking to the group of around 80 children and answering their questions, the 100m hurdler, who still lives in Leamington, took to the track and offered her support and encouragement during the races.

When the competitive action was over, McGreavy served up some healthy homemade flapjacks and an array of fresh fruit courtesy of her sponsors, Leamington-based workplace catering specialists Catermasters.

Telford School head teacher Mr Richard Siviter said: “As a school we’ve always had a good track record in sport, so it’s been great to welcome one of our ex-pupils back and hear about her experiences as an international athlete.

“The children really enjoyed meeting Sara and this kind of thing can only encourage them to enjoy their sport and keep fit and healthy.

“We’ll be following Sara’s London 2012 journey closely and hopefully cheering her to success.”

McGreavy, who presented the school with a signed Team GB running vest, said: “It’s been an amazing morning and I hope the children have got something out of my visit.

“I’m extremely passionate about the Telford School and very grateful for the support that the teachers gave me when I was younger.

“Today I wanted to show the children that they can achieve their goals in sport if they work hard, eat the right foods and look after themselves.

“It was great to see them smiling and having so much fun during their sports day and also tucking into the healthy snacks that my sponsor kindly provided at the end.”
