Parsons and United on a winning streak

Welford’s Moira Parsons claimed an impressive double at the 67th Ladies Open at Victoria Park.

Parsons won the ladies’ singles and teamed up with Maureen Edwards from Thornfield Bolwing Club to claim the ladies’ pairs.

Donna Kerr and Dick Williams of Royal Leamington Spa won the mixed pairs while Southam United’s Patsy Tandy, Velisa Brown and Kevin Tandy lifted the mixed triples.

The triples title was part of a fantatsic run of success for Southam.

Patsy and Kevin Tandy have already won the county mixed pairs and the club’s ladies beat Stratford 3-1 to win the County Top Club title.

Patsy Tandy got Southam off to a great start at Sherwood Park, winning the singles 21-14.

Then, after a see-saw encounter, the triple of Mal Eaton, Heather Tredgold and Sandi Couchman edged home 16-15.

Despite a magnificent comeback, the rink of Chris Cooke, Marie Bromwich, Wendy Jeffs and Fran Padbury went down on the last end 22-19.

However, Rosemarie Geden and Velisa Brown secured the title with a 23-11 success in the pairs.

With three county semi-finals and one quarter-final being reached in other competitions it marks the ladies’ finest year in the club’s short history.

John Henfrey and Bernadette McDonnell had a productive afternoon at Lillington’s club finals day.

Henfrey won the men’s singles final against Richard Burroughs after earlier partnering Norman Stephens to success in the men’s pairs.

Likewise, McDonnell became the ladies’ singles champion, defeating Maureen Southgate, after successfully partnering Jacqui Cook to the ladies’ chosen pairs.

Other winners: Jane Crawley (handicap singles), Val Joyce (Captain’s Cup), Mick Smith (Welch Trophy), Richard Burroughs (Colin Walton Trophy), Sue Hornsby (two-wood singles), Gary Laffey (handicap singles), Ann Dohery and Jane Crawley (ladies’ drawn pairs), Bernard and Liz Crowther (Haesler Trophy).

Barry Grant was the big winner at WCC Staff’s finals weekend, coming away with four trophies.

Grant beat Bala Maniam to lift the men’s open and also claimed the mixed handicap, men’s three-woods and Pat Macken Trophy alongside Ann Vann.

Other winners: Hilary Hickman (ladies’ open), Mike Higgins and Michael French (pairs), Ken Dorsett (mixed two-woods), Frank Jackson, Colin Randall and Michael French (triples); Wayne Roberts (novices), George Barber, Alan Bailey and John Jessamine (KD Gala Trophy).

Warwick Boat Club’s charity gala for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution raised £145, with Mary Wheildon leading her rink of Michael North, Bill Roots and Margaret Davies to overall victory.

Lyn Taylor also skipped a 21-9 victory, with Barbara Wigmore’s quartet staging a late comeback to edge their rink 19-16.

Jenny Wickens was unbeaten as Royal Leamington Spa’s ladies enjoyed back-to-back victories in the space of two days.

Wickens skipped a 13-11 success in a four-rink triples win at Southam which was reduced to 15 ends due to bad light. She then romped to a 30-12 success as Spa overcame Snitterfield 64-42 in a three-rink triples.

Vi Palmer (17-13) and Cynthia Briggs (13-12) were also victorious against Southam, while Elizabeth G Jones claimed a 26-12 against Snitterfield.

Leamington’s men, meanwhile were on the receiving end of a drubbing against near-neighbours Avenue.

Malcolm Wickens (20-14) was Leamington’s only victor as Avenue claimed a 132-76 success in the six-rink triples.

Bill Port was the star of the show for Avenue, romping to a 32-13 success over Richard Ashley’s trio.

Tony Farmer (29-11) was also a big winner, with Martin Renshaw (19-11), Helen Slimm (20-6) and Nicky Walker (18-15) underlining Avenue’s dominance.
