Savery in second as the Gloucester League reaches the half-way mark

Andy Savery sits in the silver medal position after the second of the four-race Gloucester League, following his fifth place at Pitville Park, Cheltenham.

On a soft surface buffeted by gusting winds, the Leamington C&AC athlete followed up his third place in the series opener with a run of 32min 39sec for the undulating 9.1k course.

Clubmate Guy Allen was one place back in 33:03, with George Loveday 52nd (7th under-20) in 37:13. The team was completed by Eoin O’Flynn (37:49), Craig Bower (37:58) and Paul Caruana (40:39) for fourth place overall behind hosts Cheltenham.

Steve Roberts (41:29), Alex Montgomery (43:56), Graham Roberts (47:54) and Noel Butler (48:47) completed the Leamington men’s contingent.

Stephen Page led Kenilworth Runners’ men on the first of the three laps but was overhauled on the second lap by Phil Gould, who finished 14th in 34:18.

Page crossed the line 26th in 35:06, with Pete Matthews (37:31), Marc Curtis (37:46), Matt Dyer (38:19) and Roger Homes (38:35) completing the scoring team for seventh place.

Earlier, the women tackled two laps of the course (6.08km), with Marie Voice (26:51) leading Kenilworth Runners ladies throughout to finish in a very creditable 15th place.

She was followed by Claire Goult (34th in 28:15) and Danielle Mohacsi (43rd in 29:11) who made up the first of four Kenilworth teams, finishing seventh place overall.

Leamington C&AC only had two senior women running, with Angela Chahal 42nd in 29:03 and Carol Blower 111th in 34:15.

Leamington C&AC took 16 runners to the second event of the junior Gloucester Cross Country League series, which took place as a prelude to the senior races.

A very successful day resulted in the boys’ under-13 and under-15s teams maintaining their respective silver and bronze medal positions.

Cian McKeaney led the under-13s home in sixth, closely followed by Will Eadon (7th).

A solid run by third counter Dominic Priest resulted in the trio claiming second on the day.

The under-15 team, running in their first season in this age group, were led home by Alex Ibbs (10th) followed closely by Kieran Chahal (13th) and Greg West (14th).

Melanie Gould, whose father Phil and mother Laura ran for Kenilworth later in the day, finished 50th in under-11 girls in 9:41.

Another Kenilworth Runners member, Neil Sheward, saw his son Lewis (Coventry Godiva) cross the line 17th in the under-15 boys in 21:22.
