Tims loses out to Efde in last eight of the Women’s National Singles

Tims, who bowed out in the first round of the two-wood singles after a 16-13 defeat to Iver Heath’s Lorna Efde, recorded a convincing 21-7 success over Swaffham Town’s Jan Dearman in her opening match.

She then beat Worcestershire bowler Pat Logan (Gilt Edge BC, Worcestershire) 21-12 and Shirley Plummer (Rookery BC, Suffolk) 21-8 to reach the last eight.

There she suffered a 21-12 defeat to Donna Brookes (Bletchley Town BC, Buckinghamshire).

The singles was won by Commonwealth Games silver medalist Natalie Melmore, who beat fellow Devon bowler Sue Evans 21-10 in the final.

Avenue’s Adam Smith suffered a heartbreaking exit in the semi-final of the inaugural Sutton Winson Trophy, open to under-18 bowlers of both sexes.

Smith won five games to get through to the last four where he faced Higham Ferrers Town’s Chloe Wordingham.

It proved to be an excellent match in which Smith lost the first set 4-1 before winning the second 8-0.

Wordingham claimed the third 5-4 but Smith hit back to win the fourth 7-2 to set up a one-bowl shoot-out.

After losing the toss, Smith was asked to bowl first and left his wood around a yard short of the jack.

Wordingham then got inside his wood to set up a final encounter against another Adam Smith, this time from Gloucestershire, which the 17-year-old won 3-1 to claim the £200 first prize.

Whitnash’s Harry Billington suffered a second-round exit at the hands of Huntingdonshire’s R Martin.

Lillington’s Jenny Corn beat Huntingdonshire’s Val Corn 21-10 in the first round of the Women’s Senior Singles before suffering defeat by the same scoreline at the hands of Worcestershire bowler Sue Davies.

Both Warwickshire’s National Triples Championship entries fell at the first hurdle.

The Avenue family triple of Hannah Smith, mum Lisa and grandmother Yvonne Pick went down 16-12 to Hampshire’s Cowplain BC, while Wellesbourne’s Margaret Colvin, Helen Slimm and skip Margaret Woof-Waterhouse lost 22-10 to Buckinghamshire representatives Aylesbury Town.
