Winn brothers reign over Southam pair

Southam duo Aubrey Brown and Kevin Tandy suffered an agonising defeat in the Coronation Cup last Sunday at Rugby Bowls Association’s finals day.

The pair lost out to Oakfield’s talented brothers Peter and Martin Winn, who secured a 20-19 extra-end victory in an absorbing tussle at the Grange club.

The Winns trailed 5-1 at five ends but five ends later they were 11-5 ahead after scoring an eighth end five together with one double and three singles.

With 15 ends completed, Brown and Tandy were on level terms at 14-14 and with 21 ends completed it was still all to play for at 21-21.

But on a tense extra end it was the Winns who picked up the all-important winning single.

In the last competition of the season for Lillington BC, 46 members competed in the Rheams mixed pairs four-wood competition, which was won by Jane Crawley and Malcolm Welch. Margaret Stephens and Tony Richards were runners-up.

Lillington’s men, meanwhile suffered mixed fortunes in their two recent games, beating Highway 99-83 and then slumping to a 130-103 defeat at the hands of Royal Leamington Spa.

Ted Rheams led John Randerson, Mike Davies and Paul Wakem to a 23-12 success in the five-rink encounter against Highway, with Dennis Lee (21-16) and Nigel Roach (23-12) also tasting victory.

Malcolm Welch earned an 18-18 draw, while Keith Francis (25-14) was the only Lillington bowler to taste defeat.

Roach made it two from two with an excellent 28-12 victory over Ray White in the six-rink friendly at Victoria Park.

Nick Simmonds was also successful, beating Bill Griffin’s rink 26-10.

However, despite John Randerson earning an 18-18 draw against Dave Gardner, heavy losses for Welch against Dick Allibon (32-9), Dennis Lee against Ivor Harris (30-12) and Ray Walton at the hands of Bill Edkins (26-12) condemned Lillington to an overall defeat.

Leamington’s women suffered a 48-39 defeat in a three-rink triples game at home to Bidford-on-Avon.

With 15 ends played, the two sides were locked together at 37-37.

However, Leamington picked up just two shots in the last six ends to allow Bidford to forge ahead.

Jenny Wickens claimed a comprehensive 20-12 victory for Spa, while Cynthia Briggs (14-13) and Gloria Hensman (22-6) both suffered reverses.
